We are now planning a trip to Jefferson's Monticello.

Saturday, February 2, seems to be a reasonable date if the weather is ok. We would like to avoid the long lines around the tourist season.

The weather is predicted to be in the 60's so this Saturday (Feb. 2) seems to be a "Go." We may have some rain but that is better than snow. Since the major part of this is inside, rain should not be a problem. If rain is still in the forecast, umbrellas should be with us.

Thomas Jefferson said, "If God is just, I tremble for my country."

For me that means Jefferson was well aware of the moral depravity of slavery and the religious basis to it in the South. Though the Bible was used to justify slavery (Jefferson rewrote parts of the New Testament because he felt that much of the books of the Bible were not correctly translated or presented), Jefferson seemed to feel that the underlying concept of a moral God would oppose slavery.

Perhaps, Jefferson saw the carnage of the Civil War coming. Thomas Jefferson was aware that many are reluctant to give up traditional ways even if those ways are unjust and truly wrong. Yet, he was still a slave-owner though he did admit that it was wrong.

Did Jefferson tremble for himself? Did he feel trapped in the institution of slavery? Or did he think that he was smart enough to escape the fate of such injustice? There was tragedy in Jefferson's life (ex. his wife's death). Was it Monticello that killed her? What is the real cost of such extravagance?
